How Selling Changes When You Serve Top Earners
Moving your practice upmarket sounds like doing the same work for wealthier clients. It is not. Serving the top slice of earners changes the mechanics of the sale, in ways that make the work less about volume and more about fit. Here is what changes.
FOUR THINGS THAT CHANGE UPMARKET
Caliber replaces volume
What it is. With the right client, one conversation can be worth twenty.
The trade-off. You no longer need a ten-times-larger lead list, because the value of each case is higher and, in the right structure, the premium is effectively pre-funded by tax savings. The underlying math of the practice changes, not only the size of the numbers.
The real objection changes
What it is. Lower in the market the objection is money. At the top it is time and trust.
The trade-off. High earners are not asking whether they can afford it. They are asking how much of their time it will take and whether they can trust you to handle it. You earn the case on stewardship, not on price.
The work shifts from selling to fitting
What it is. The task becomes matching a small set of proven structures to the client’s situation.
The trade-off. Over-engineering is the common failure, hunting the perfect product that saves a few cents rather than using a sound structure that fits nearly every case. Defaulting everyone to the cheapest option is the opposite error. A simple checklist of what a good-fit case looks like keeps you out of both.
Trust is the whole of it
What it is. The high-earning client delegates. You know what you are doing; I do not; I trust you.
The trade-off. Earning that trust before the meeting, through credible, technical, unhurried material, is what gets you in the room. Nearly everything upstream of the conversation matters more than the pitch.
Is this slice right for you?
A good-fit client here typically has household income around $350,000 or more, already itemizes or is close to it, and is insurable.
If you serve, or want to serve, that slice, the shift is available to you. If the practice is built on high-volume, lower-income cases, this is a different business, and worth entering deliberately rather than drifting into.
